  • Math is cool. **EDITORIAL c
Math is Way Cool--It’s taking root in Hollywood movies like "Good Will Hunting," where the hero conquers differential equations instead of alien robots or terrorists. You can even buy a new men’s cologne called "Pi" after the mathematical ratio 3.14 that we all learned in school and promptly forgot.
The trend toward "math is cool" comes even as math performance by American students continues to decline. Trend-spotters may have noticed something surprising lately--math is cool, at least outside the classroom.  Mathematicians are cast as heroes in two movies this year, and books about math and numbers, written for the general public, are selling unusually well.
