Mentor Teacher Responsibilities

A mentor teacher's responsibilities include:

  1. meeting regularly with the student teacher, both formally and informally.

  2. guiding the student teacher through the daily operation of the school.

  3. arranging for the student teacher to visit different teacher's classes.

  4. demonstrating lessons for the student teacher.

  5. observing the student teacher's teaching and providing feedback, nonjudgementally.

  6. being a role model in all aspects of professionalism.

  7. developing both mentoring and teaching skills.

  8. supporting and counseling the student teacher, providing perspective when needed.

Pitfalls of mentoring

  1. Overextending

  2. Lacking clarification of the mentor's role from all concerned

  3. Assuming excessive responsibility for the student teacher

  4. Improving as a mentor, but not as a teacher
