PREPARING TEACHERS The purpose of this project is to explore training activities and curricula that will improve graduating teachers abilities to teach the sciences in ways that will be needed by the K-12 schools in the 21st century, and to be able to adapt to new teaching models as they develop in the future. PROCESS A Goals 2000 Planning Group for preparing Teachers to teach science has been in operation in southwest and south central Missouri since 1994. Meetings of, input to, and many long discussions by the group resulted in a vision, proposed curricular framework, a list of activities to study, and a proposed budget to carry out the program. VISION A program of study is envisioned that will provide systemic changes in the preparation of teachers to teach science, as judged by a continual process of assessment. It will emphasize early and continuous identification, selection, and retention of prospective teachers of science from the diverse population of entering freshmen at Missouri State University. The curriculum resulted from collaboration among higher education and K-12 faculty who integrated subject content and process with professional education courses in a manner that supports optimal learning experiences. Curricular activities will assist in the molding of reflective decision-makers who will, in turn, be capable of providing the best possible experiences to their young learners in the K-12 sciences. |
