Below are some of the national targets that the
Goals 2000: Educate America Act
set for accomplishment by the year 2000--
and beyond!!:

bulletU.S. students will be first in the world in mathematics and science achievement.

bulletThe nation's teaching force will have access to programs for continued improvement of their professional abilities and the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to instruct and prepare all American students for the next century.

bulletThe high school graduation rate will increase to at least 90 percent.

bulletAmerican students will leave grades four, eight and twelve having demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter including civics and government, proper English usage, economics, a foreign language, geography, history, mathematics and science.

bulletEvery child will start school ready to learn.

bullet

Every school in America will ensure that all students can use their minds well, so that they may be prepared for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment in our nation's modern economy.

Here are ways that Missouri State
aimed at these targets:

bullet   Missouri State is in test tube "Research" the forefront of the development of better instruction for new Missouri science teachers, as discussed in "The Science-related Profile of Faculty and Students with Respect to Classroom Environment and Science Teaching Beliefs."

    The preservice teacher training grant at Missouri State will provide a systemic model for changing the way universities prepare teachers to teach science, from the 1st through the 12th grade. There will be a fundamental emphasis throughout the program on early and continuous interactions with the 1-12 learning environment.
   The final curriculum will result from cooperative planning between higher education faculty, both professional educators and content specialists, and practicing 1-12 teachers who have established themselves as being outstanding teachers. The curriculum will integrate disciplinary content and process with educational methodology and pedagogy.
    This integrated experience will support optimal learning experiences and assist in the molding of reflective decision-makers who will, in turn be capable of providing the best possible experiences in science to their 1-12 students in the 21st century.
    Three action teams have been established. They include an elementary/middle team, a secondary (unified science) team, and an assessment team. The first two teams will establish the program objectives, curriculum competencies, and coursework sequence required for their particular grade levels. Some of the many factors to be built into the program include:

bulletformation of cohort groups for sharing experiences, activities, and courses;
bulletearly and continuous interactions with 1-12 learning environments;
bulletlaboratory experiences in preparation, safety, and student research;
bulletutilization of technology, when appropriate, in their teaching; the Show-meTomorrow's Teachers Using Technology site, done by teaching students, is an example.
bulletintegrate the use of hand-held computers into the learning experience;
bullettechniques and utilization of distance learning;
bulletconnection of theory and practice through seminars with practicing teachers;
bulletuse of Show-Me Standards, Missouri Frameworks, and National Standards in curricula;
bulletmodeling effective teaching techniques and strategies;
bulletestablishing year-long internships with partner schools;
bulletemphasizing the professionalism of teaching.

     The assessment team will establish baseline levels of competence and motivation, and then measure changes in competence and motivation as the newly designed programs are taught on a pilot basis. For this pilot phase, relatively small cohorts of volunteer students will be taken through the new programs.
    The pilot group of incoming freshmen pictured on the home page are guaranteed that this program will more than satisfy their certification requirements to teach. This first group will continue to progress through the pilot during the 1999-2000 academic year, and a new freshman cohort will start through their first year of the pilot. Once this first group has been entirely through the pilot, it will be formalized into an on-going program.
