Launching Pad

Welcome to the Launching Pad, a newsletter for GOALS 2000 participants and other interested individuals. This informal correspondence is intended to keep all those interested aware of current activities and coming attractions as well as hot tips on Web sites, teaching strategies, and new information technologies. This forum will also provide an opportunity for the contribution of successful practices, ideas and visions.

 Strafford:

Point to Point Physics--A spin off of GOALS 2000 initiatives is a collaboration between Strafford R-VI School District. and Greenwood Lab School/Missouri State whereby Hugh Brewer, Greenwood Physics, Chemistry teacher, is teaching a Physics class to Strafford High School students from his Greenwood classroom via videoconferencing, Internet, and FAX.

The transmission is taking place over ISDN bri phone lines at 128 kbps. Hugh reports that the achievement levels of the Strafford class and the Greenwood class are within 1% of each other.

Field Service Model--Through a High Plains Consortium Grant, several preservice secondary science methods students are spending portions of their time in science classrooms in the Strafford elementary and middle schools. The model being developed is an "earn while you learn" endeavor, whereby the students are paid substitute wages as they collaborate with the regular classroom teacher.

In doing research on the Internet with CD-ROM software related to science curriculum. this research is designed to develop strategies for integrating technology and research information into the instructional process.

Lebanon:

The Lebanon School District is well on its way to establishing connections through video-conferencing capabilities with Missouri State and the GOALS 2000 group.  John Sode's classroom will be the first direct connection. This will allow interactions by teachers and students at both Missouri State and Lebanon to enhance their educational experiences.  In addition, it will allow direct access to a classroom for observations and discussions of events within the course.  As the year continues, further collaborative ventures will be explored extending from kindergarten through middle school.

Springfield:

Frank Lojko, Science Specialist from Springfield R-12 School District, is serving on the GOALS 2000 project as a liaison between Springfield Schools and Missouri State. He is actively involved in working with the Secondary Methods class as well as a number of other activities in conjunction with the project. Frank is able to bring his unique perspective and experience as a supervisor of science teachers in working with our pre-service teachers.

bulletVideoConferencing

The Ziridis Schools is a big private school in Athens, Greece. They emphasize the use of technology in teaching and have started videoconferencing with other schools and universities. They have connected to Finland but are trying to find other contacts in Europe and elsewhere. They are also interested in email-cooperation and virtual-projects with students of elementary and high schools.
