Choosing a career is one of life's most important decisions and too often it's made quickly with little information. But, making a decision about what you will do with your life is tremendously exciting when you realize that TODAY a young woman graduating from high school now has choices limited only by her imagination. The DREAMS can come true.
National surveys and government reports show many young women considering career options still avoid many fields, even though they have all the aptitudes, intelligence, and interest. The TRUTH is...women today handle jobs at all levels in science and technology. Only rarely are the qualifications needed for a job limited to one sex or the other. In our mechanized world, physical strength is of little importance in most jobs. Mental ability, creativity, curiosity, interest in problem solving, and perseverance are what is needed for careers in science and technology.
Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is an annual conference offered on the Missouri State University campus. It offers opportunities to sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students to get involved with scientific learning and to talk with women scientists and professionals from the community about their careers, work experience and education. It is the intention of the conference to INCREASE young women's interest in science, mathematics, and technology through hands-on activities directed by women in those fields; to FOSTER awareness of career opportunities for women in math- and science-related fields; to PROVIDE students an opportunity to meet and form personal contacts with women scientists, engineers, and mathematicians; to PROVIDE parents, teachers, and other adult leaders with the knowledge and resources to encourage young women to choose any career they desire; and to ENCOURAGE scientific discovery by using the processes and procedures needed to design and carry out an award winning science project.
Do you enjoy the sciences? Would you like to see how to make math fun? Do you enjoy hands-on activities? Are you interested in career opportunities available to women in the math and science fields? Interested in meeting other young women with your similar interests? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you will enjoy our upcoming conference.
